Competitions Urbanism
We Placed in the Urban and Architectural Competition for Mlynské Nivy

YIT Slovakia launched an urban and architectural design competition for the redevelopment of the former panel factory and adjacent industrial site at Mlynské Nivy in Bratislava.

We’re pleased to share that our studio, COMPASS, was awarded 3rd place ex aequo in this competition. Our proposal was described by the jury as exceptionally well-suited.

From the jury's evaluation:

"Exceptionally well-developed thinking in terms of the wider urban context – addressing public transport, car traffic, and park-and-ride solutions. The proposal offers a strong concept for the future Mlynské Nivy boulevard and its integration into the surrounding development."

About Our Proposal

Urban Concept
Our design introduces a new urban block centered around a large public park, envisioned as a green oasis within this emerging district. The second key element is a residential tower, set to become a landmark on the eastern edge of Bratislava’s expanding downtown.

Preserving Industrial Heritage
We propose preserving and revitalizing two historic industrial halls from the original site. These are repurposed to host community, cultural, and market functions, keeping the memory of the site's past alive.

Ecological Urbanism
Green infrastructure is a core part of the design, not just an afterthought. We included a retention pond, permeable surfaces, community greenhouses, green roofs, and photovoltaic panels – all forming a truly integrated ecological concept.

Mobility and Public Transport
The entire site is car-free inside, with vehicle access handled from the perimeter. We also proposed a new park-and-ride system and tram connections on both the north and south ends of the site.

Design Flexibility
The masterplan is composed of 7 urban blocks arranged around the central park. These can be developed by different design teams, enabling architectural diversity. The administrative buildings are also designed for flexible phasing and tenant configurations.
